Independent verification

Cryptographic hashing is deterministic: the same input and algorithm always produce the same output. Any two standards-compliant implementations agree. If you use a hash produced by our tools to make a security decision — verifying a download, storing a credential, comparing artifacts — you should confirm the result against an independent, standards-compliant implementation (for example, sha256sum, OpenSSL's dgst, or a language library such as Python's hashlib or Node's crypto). We accept no responsibility for decisions made solely on outputs generated by this site.

Trade-off statements such as "Argon2id is stronger than bcrypt" describe well-established cryptographic properties; they are not a guarantee of any outcome, and they are not a substitute for an architect or auditor who understands your full system.

Security recommendations change

Cryptography moves. A factor, memory size, or algorithm that is sound today can be obsolete next year, as research and hardware improve. Recommendations on this site (cost factors, memory settings, "use Argon2id") reflect the state of the field at the date shown on each article and will be revised over time. Always consult current primary sources — the OWASP Password Storage Cheat Sheet, NIST FIPS publications, and your own vendor — before finalizing a design.
